The Power of Habit

Have you ever wondered "Why are some people more successful than others?". The answer is simple: You are where you are and what you are just because of yourself. Everything what you are today or ever will be in the future depends on you. Your life today is the total result of your choices, decisions and actions. Your life is 10% of what happens and 90% of how you react to it. Your success is connected with action. Successful people keep moving. They also make mistakes but they don't quit. I won't say that it is easy. I'm saying that is worth. Your motivation is what gets you started but your habits is what keeps you going. You can create own future by changing your behaviors. You can make new choices and decisions that are more consistent with the person you want to be and the things you want to accomplish in your life.

Powerful Habits

One of the most important discovery in the field of psychology and success is that fully 95% of everything what you think, feel, do, achieve is the result of habit. Everything starting in an early childhood because then they starting formed. Habit formation is the process by which a behavior, through regular repetition, becomes automatic or habitual. Through that we developed a series of conditioned responses that lead us automatically and unthinkingly in almost every situation. To make it simpler - successful people has successful habits, those who don't have ones struggling to succeed.

Success

People always asking what exactly success means. Definition is obvious: "Success is the ability to live your life the way you want to live it, doing what you most enjoy, surrounded by people who you admire and respect." One of the most important goal you must achieve to be happy and successful in life is development of your own character, your skills and behavior. No matter if you want to be an inspiring leader, good person or role model for personal excellence. The key factor is that in the achievement of your goals is development of the specific habits that lead you automatically and inevitably to the results that you want to achieve.

Simple acts

The person who you are or who you'd like to be is highly determined by your thoughts, feelings and behaviour. In that case, the key factor to living a great life is to develop successful habits that lead you to achieving everything what you want. Your successful habits are simple acts which have enormous power. They can be either positive and negative and help us to reach our goals or holding us back. Crucial for improving your life and building future career is forming good habits and changing bad ones. Knowing the power of habits personally helped me built positive ones: waking up earlier, drinking more water, doing sports three times per week, learning every day, eating healthy and regularly. Some of good habits made me more successful so I'd like to share with you that knowledge to help you build your own.

Process

First of all, you have to know about formation of habits. This is a circular process with three steps of "habit loop":

  1. Cue - a situational trigger that is based on a reward you're seeking.
  2. Routine - a physical or emotional action you take to obtain the reward.
  3. Reward - the satisfaction you seek by following the routine.

To modify a habit, you must decide to change it. Important is to consciously accept the hard work of identifying the cues and rewards that drive habit's routines and then find alternatives. When I'm asking people, what is needed as a first to form new habits, they're always saying self-control and motivation. I disagree. The reminder is a critical part of forming new habits. A good reminder does not rely on motivation and it doesn't require you to remember to do your new habit. This is what makes it easy to start your new behaviour.

Everyday act

Once you identify your habit loop it will be easier to make a plan on how to change it. You will probably make some mistakes along the way. Maybe some days you will miss your cue. It's reasonable to expect that it's going to take some practice before your new habit loop is set in motion. However, remember that once you've built some habits, there's a tendency to build other habits much easier. These are called keystone habits and they're helping us to create "small wins" in our lives. Start from small things and stretch your willpower to change your day-to-day habits step-by-step into ones which will bring you closer to your success.
